For Thrush and other Hoof Problems

Hoof and Frog Care with Strahlfoili

Taboo Topic: Thrush

No one likes to talk about it, but the fact is that most horses have had problems with thrush at least once.

A common misconception is that thrush only occurs in winter, due to poorly mucked out stalls or muddy weather.

However, there are many causes: in addition to wet weather, unfavourable hoof shapes, incorrect trimming, a weakened immune system, poor hoof care and many other factors can contribute to thrush.

A healthy, well-groomed hoof is the best prevention – no matter what time of year! At the first signs of trouble, action should be taken quickly to avoid bigger problems.

As with many things in life, however, prevention is better than cure, which is why we strongly recommend treating hooves with Strahlfoili as a matter of course.

How to use Strahlfoili for horses with thrush

Prepare and Clean the Hoof

The application of Strahlfoili is simple.

Pick out the dirt and brush the hooves clean.

A regular hoof pick and a hard brush or wire brush are essential.

If you washed your horses hooves make sure to dry them with a towel.

Apply Strahlfoili to the hoof

Once the hoof and frog have been cleaned, Strahlfoili can be easily applied to the areas affected by thrush. Strahlfoili is for external use only.

Strahlfoili can be applied to the hoof by hand, with a brush, a wooden spatula or a small brush, such as a toothbrush.

In acute cases of thrush, use Strahlfoili daily for at least 10 days.

For preventive care, we recommend to apply Strahlfoili 2-4 times a week to the hoof.

Strahlfoili cam remain on the hoof, there is no need to wash or brush it off.

Pro-Tip

In cases of deep-seated thrush in the middle frog sulcus, a cotton ball can be dipped in Strahlfoili and carefully pressed into the severely affected frog sulcus with a blunt object. This is not a must when using Strahlfoili, but it can be useful in cases of severe thrush. If you decide to use the soaked cotton ball method, always proceed with caution when pressing it in and please do not use a dirty hoof pick.

5 hoof problems (apart from thrush) to use Strahlfoili for

Strahlfoili is very versatile, which is why we have summarised five hoof problems for which Strahlfoili offers an excellent solution:

1️⃣ Problems with the white line – Unfortunately, many barefoot horses have problems with the white line. Strahlfoili helps you to care for and strengthen it.

2️⃣ Brittle walls – Old nail holes and brittle hoof walls allow bacteria to penetrate the hoof, but you can prevent this with Strahlfoili.

3️⃣ Hoof cracks – Cleanliness is paramount when there is a horn crack or crack in the hoof. Strahlfoili helps you to curb bacteria and prevent “hollow wall”.

4️⃣ For support with laminitis, hoof abscesses and similar conditions. Strahlfoili helps your horses wherever bacteria and germs can be contained.

5️⃣ Maintenance of the hoof sole and frog – Even if you don't currently have a crumbly sole or thrush, it is advisable to take preventive measures. Applying Strahlfoili to the sole and frog 2-4 times a week will prevent problems caused by weather changes and other factors in the long term.

Can I use Hufoili on competition horses?

Yes, it is doping-free.

We have had it tested several times by the company that carries out checks on competition horses, and it has been confirmed as safe on each occasion.

For FEI examinations, the issue of doping-free products was never in question. However, the FN (German Equestrian Federation) received queries from customers in the past regarding the eucalyptus oil in the product, but the concentration we use is well below the specified limits.

You can use all our products without a doubt on competition and racehorses.

FAQs

How to apply Strahlfoili?

Strahlfoili is easy to apply to the horse's hoof! Clean out the hooves, brush them well (you can use a wire brush), apply generously to the desired areas of the hoof, and you're done! In extreme cases of thrush, Strahlfoili can also be pressed into the central sulcus with a cotton ball.

That depends on how badly the hoof is affected. In acute cases of thrush, Strahlfoili should be applied once a day for at least 10 days. After 10 days of correct application, an improvement will be visible, but the actual improvement can often only be seen (especially in winter) once the hoof has been freshly trimmed.

As soon as the frog has recovered from thrush, you should consider using Strahlfoili 2-4 times a week to prevent the thrush from coming back.

In principle, more is not always better – nevertheless, Strahlfoili should be applied generously.

The applied layer should be clearly visible to guarantee optimal protection and care.

Strahlfoili is clay-based and therefore thick (creamy) and releases active ingredients into the hoof over a longer period of time. If you do not have any acute problems, you can of course apply it a little thinner if you wish.

Yes, both.

Strahlfoili is suitable for any stable environment.

Your horse can be turned out and enjoy the field with Strahlfoili. However, if your horse is in the stable over night, we recommend applying it in the evening.

Not at all, you can let the hoof down as soon as it is rubbed in.

No, Strahlfoili can be used on both barefoot and shod horses and does not need to be covered. If your horse needs a hoof bandage for an abscess, Strahlfoili can also be applied under the bandage to combat bacteria. Strahlfoili can also be used under a hoof boot.

Thanks to its clay base, Strahlfoili adheres very well to the hoof and settles nicely into all cracks and crevices. Ideally, you should apply it to the cleaned hoof after riding or paddock time, but as you can see, it also works before work. Strahlfoili adheres to and survives both indoor/outdoor surfaces and the paddock. It forms a protective film and a barrier against moisture, germs and bacteria, while caring for the hoof and providing antibacterial protection.

No please don't wash it off. You should simply pick out and brush the hoof before reapplying.

Yes, Strahlfoili is an excellent solution to keep horses hooves healthy under pads. It is further tested with the most common Polyurethane materials on the market and can be used with any shoeing method. Polyurethanen bekannter Hersteller.

This is where it gets a little more complicated, because the answer depends on many factors, such as:
🧲 Hoof size
🧲 How often do you apply
🧲 How many areas of the hoof do you apply to
🧲 Auf welche Bereiche tragt ihr auf

🧲 and so on....

Basically, one can say that one tin lasts for 4-8 weeks with regular application to two hooves. If you only fill the nail holes, the tin will last well over eight weeks, but if you need intensive treatment for four draft hooves, a 500g tin can be used up more quickly.
