For trush and other hoof problems

Hoof care with Strahlfoili

A taboo subject: thrush!

Nobody likes to talk about it, but the fact is that most horses have had problems with thrush at least once.

There is a widespread misconception that thrush only occurs in winter, due to poorly mucked stables or muddy fields.

BUT there are many causes why your horse may suffer from thrush. In addition to wet weather, unfavourable hoof shapes, incorrect trimming, a weakened immune system and a lack of hoof care and many other things can favour thrush.

A healthy, well cared for hoof is the best precaution - no matter what time of year! At the first signs, action should be taken quickly to avoid major problems.

However, as with many things in life, prevention is better than cure, which is why we strongly recommend that horses' hooves are always cared for with Strahlfoili.

How to apply Strahlfoili against thrush:

Pick out the hooves and prepare them

The application of Strahlfoili for horses with thrush is very simple.

First, the hoof should be properly scraped and brushed.

A regular hoof pick and a wire brush are ideal for this.

If you have washed the hooves, we recommend drying them briefly with a towel.

Apply Strahlfoili to the hoof

Once the hoof and frog have been cleaned, Strahlfoili can simply be applied to the areas affected by thrush. Strahlfoili is only suitable for external use.

Strahlfoili can be applied to the hoof by hand, with a brush, a spatula or with a small brush, such as a toothbrush.

In acute cases, Strahlfoili should be applied daily for at least 10 days.

For care and prevention, we recommend using Strahlfoili 2-4 times a week.

Strahlfoili does not need to be washed off the hoof, it can simply be left on as a protective shield.

Pro-Tip:

In the case of deep-seated thrush in the central sulcus, cotton wool can be dipped in Strahlfoili and carefully pressed into the heavily affected central sulcus with a blunt object.
This is not a must for care with Strahlfoili, but can be useful in the case of severe rot and infection. If you decide to use the method with the soaked cotton ball, you should always be careful when pressing it in and please never use a dirty hoof pick.

5 hoof problems (apart from thrush) that Strahlfoili can help your horse with

Strahlfoili is very versatile, which is why we have summarised 5 hoof problems for which Strahlfoili offers a great solution:

1️⃣ Problems with the white line - Many barefoot horses unfortunately have problems with the white line, Strahlfoili helps you to maintain and strengthen it.

2️⃣ Brittle walls - Old nail holes and brittle hoof walls allow bacteria to enter the hoof, which you can prevent with Strahlfoili.

3️⃣ Hoof cracks - Cleanliness is paramount when there is a crack in the hoof. Strahlfoili helps you to contain bacteria and helps to prevent white line disease.

4️⃣ Strahlfoili helps your horses wherever bacteria and germs can develop, eg laminitis, hoof abscesses and the like.

5️⃣ Maintenance of the sole and frog - Even if your horse doesn’t have a crumbling sole or thrush at the moment, it is advisable to take precautions. Applying Strahlfoili to the sole and frog 2-4 times a week will prevent problems caused by weather changes etc. in the long term.

FAQs

How to apply Strahlfoili

Strahlfoili is easy to apply to the horse's hoof! Scrape out the hooves, brush well (also with a wire brush), apply generously to the desired areas on the hoof & that's it! In extreme cases of thrush, Strahlfoili can also be pressed into the centre frog furrow with a cotton wool ball.

This depends on how badly the hoof is affected. In acute cases of thrush, Strahlfoili should be applied once a day for at least 10 days. After 10 days of correct application an improvement will be visible, the actual improvement can often (especially in winter) only be seen when the hoof is freshly trimmed.)

As soon as the frog has clearly recovered from the rot, we recommend 2-4 times a week for care and prevention.

Yes, both.

Strahlfoili can be used on horses in open stables without any problems.

Of course, your horse can also go out into the paddock or field with Strahlfoili. If your horse is stabled overnight, we recommend applying Strahlfoili in the evening.

Not at all, the horse can put the hoof down directly after the application of Strahlfoili.

No, Strahlfoili can be used on both barehoofed and shod horses and does not need to be covered. If your horse needs a hoof dressing for an abscess, Strahlfoili can also be applied under the hoof dressing to combat bacteria. Strahlfoili can also be applied under a hoof boot.

Yes, horseshoes, pads and cushions should be applied after using Strahlfoili. Strahlfoili is well tested and does not react with pads or polyurethanes from known manufacturers.

Strahlfoili is based on clay, the ingredients are: Kaolinite, water, ZnO, copper vitriol, honey, eucalyptus oil
